Capital of the Marches region and lies on the promontory of Monte Conero directly facing the sea. Founded by the Greeks, the city experienced remarkable development when the Emperor Hadrian extended the then small port for the traffic across the Adriatic.
Split into two parts - the historic centre on Monte Guasco and the modern part of the coast - Ancona is a fascinating city.
As usual we had a private tour organised. Our meeting point was not all together clear as we were docked in the middle of another working port where public access was restricted. Eventually we located our guide Andrea, and we were off and running.... well not quite as the first half of the tour was a walking tour around the highlights of Ancona. Thankfully we started early as it was very hot later later in the day... over 30 degrees again!!
Our walking tour was for 3 hours taking in the main monuments with some dating back to the 1st century BC.

After our walking tour we had about an hour stop for lunch which was a most welcome break in a local restaurant. Lunch was delicious as was the sparkling Rose that went with it.
After lunch our guide had organised a taxi van to take us to the beautiful bay of Portonovo on the Conero Riviera and later to Sirola, a lovely seaside town in the Conero National Park.
Portonovo is a quiet town overlooking the Adriatic and is one of the charming villages on the Conero Riviera. Byzantine churches, medieval houses and sparkling views are just a few reasons to visit. There were lots of people on the beaches as it is school holidays and the weather perfect for swimming.

After roaming the streets of Sirola we had enough time to sit and take in the views and enjoy a cold drink. We then retuned to the ship in time for a 6pm Sailaway.
Tomorrow we have a much needed day at sea.
