Friday - 8 June
This is the first of 6 sea days on our way to Komodo Island.
Today we woke to sunshine and a much warmer day. It won't be long until we will be complaining about the heat! There are a number of areas on the ship (especially the Theatres) that are very cold from the air con... you almost need a blanket and beanie, scarf and gloves to sit in there.
Today is "World Oceans Day".... a celebration designed to heighten awareness of the need to protect and conserve the world's oceans.
Some fun facts:
1. Scientists suggest that there could be millions of undiscovered marine life forms still out there.
2. Compounds extracted from species of red algae found in the ocean make peanut butter easier to spread.
3. The biggest source of pollution in the ocean occurs when large tracts of land are ploughed and the exposed soil erodes during rain storms. Much of the runoff flows to the sea carrying with it fertilisers and pesticides.
4. Mariners use "port" and "starboard" instead of left and right.... when looking forward towards the bow... port is always on the left and starboard on the right.
5. Ocean water freezes just like fresh water but at a lower temperature.... freshwater at 32F but seawater at 28.4F because of the salt. When seawater freezes the ice contains very little salt because only the water freezes.... it can be melted down to use as drinking water....
Today is the the start of my serious exercise program.... tai chi at 8am followed by Zumba at 9am. It's an added bonus that my Fitbit calculates my steps during the class because it doesn't at home. My goal is a minimum of 10k per day!
I made an appearance at the Knitters and Crafters get together. Basically you take along your own projects to work on and you sit and talk! There are certainly some very talented ladies working on some very interesting projects. The good thing is that they are always happy to teach you and share their knowledge.... sharing is caring!
Tonight is our first formal night and Captain's Welcome Aboard Party with Commodore Giuseppe Romano.
